AMG began as an independent engine-tuning and racing company run by two former Mercedes-Benz engineers. DaimlerChrysler took 51% in 1999 and bought the rest in 2005, so AMG is now Mercedes-Benz's in-house performance brand. The name comes from Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach, Aufrecht's home town.
