Car trim levels explained: what LE, SE, XLE, LX, EX, VXi and ZXi mean

A trim level is an equipment grade of one model, from the cheapest base version to the best-equipped top version. The letters differ by brand. Toyota goes LE, SE, XLE, XSE; Honda goes LX, EX, EX-L, Touring; Maruti Suzuki goes LXi, VXi, ZXi, ZXi+. Higher trims add features, and sometimes a stronger engine. They don't change the basic car.
Trim levels by brand, from base to top
The ladders below show the usual order for current models. Not every model uses every step, and names change between model years and countries, so check the brochure for the exact car.
| Brand (market) | Base | Middle | Upper | Top or sporty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota (US) | LE | SE | XLE | XSE, Limited, Platinum |
| Honda (US) | LX | Sport, EX | EX-L | Touring, Sport Touring |
| Hyundai (US) | SE | SEL | N Line | Limited, Calligraphy |
| Hyundai (India) | E, EX | S, S(O) | SX | SX(O) |
| Kia (US) | LX | S, EX | GT-Line | SX, SX-Prestige |
| Ford trucks (US) | XL | XLT | Lariat | King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor |
| Volkswagen (US) | S | SE | SEL | GTI, R |
| Maruti Suzuki Arena (India) | LXi | VXi | ZXi | ZXi+ |
| Maruti Suzuki Nexa (India) | Sigma | Delta | Zeta | Alpha |
Rebadged models follow the badge on the bonnet, not the factory that built them: the Suzuki Baleno sold as a Toyota uses Toyota's grade names. See same car, different names.
What usually changes from one trim to the next?
Mostly equipment, in roughly this order as you move up:
- Base: steel or small alloy wheels, cloth seats, manual air conditioning, a basic touchscreen, the safety kit required by law.
- Middle: alloy wheels, smartphone mirroring (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), a reversing camera, cruise control, more speakers.
- Upper: automatic climate control, keyless entry, larger screens, leather or synthetic leather, heated seats, extra driver aids.
- Top or sporty: premium audio, sunroof, larger wheels, sport styling and suspension, and sometimes a more powerful engine, hybrid or all-wheel drive.
Toyota Camry LE vs SE: what's the difference?
The Camry SE is the sportier-looking version of the LE, at a similar level of equipment. It typically adds a sportier front bumper and grille, larger wheels, a rear spoiler and firmer, sport-tuned suspension. The LE rides more softly, and its smaller wheels usually give it slightly better fuel economy.
In the current (2025-on) Camry, every trim uses the same 2.5-litre hybrid, so the LE and SE have the same powertrain. Above them, the XLE adds luxury features and the XSE combines those with the SE's sporty look. Engine and dimension figures for each generation are on the Toyota Camry specs page.
Honda LX vs EX vs EX-L
LX is Honda's base trim, EX is the better-equipped middle trim, and EX-L is the EX with leather. In some generations the step up also brought a different engine. In the 2022–2024 Civic, for example, the LX used a 2.0-litre engine while the EX had the 1.5-litre turbo. From 2025 the Civic sedan dropped the EX name in favour of Sport, Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims. The CR-V still runs LX, EX and EX-L, with hybrid Sport trims above them.
What do LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ mean?
They are Maruti Suzuki's petrol trim levels for Arena-showroom cars, from base LXi to top ZXi+. The "i" originally marked a petrol engine with fuel injection; the diesel versions were LDi, VDi and ZDi. The Swift, Brezza and Dzire use this ladder.
Cars sold through Maruti's upmarket Nexa showrooms, such as the Baleno, Fronx and Grand Vitara, use Greek-letter names instead: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, Alpha. The difference between VXi and ZXi, or Delta and Zeta, is equipment such as alloy wheels, the touchscreen, climate control and the reversing camera. The exact list changes almost every model year. Suffixes like AGS or AMT (automated manual), AT (automatic) and CNG mark the gearbox or fuel, not the trim.
Does the trim change the engine?
Often it doesn't, but check. Many models use one engine across every trim, and the gearbox or drive is a separate option. Others tie engines to grades: Kia's GT-Line and Hyundai's N Line versions often get a turbo engine, Ford's Raptor has its own engine and suspension, and some hybrids or all-wheel-drive systems are only offered on upper trims. Our car pages list every engine version with power, torque, 0–100 km/h and economy figures. Use the comparison tool to put two models side by side.
Which trim level is the best value?
For most buyers the second or third trim is the sweet spot. Those are the SE, EX, SEL, VXi or Zeta. They add the features people use every day (smartphone mirroring, a reversing camera, alloy wheels, cruise control) for much less than the top trim costs. The top trim is worth it if you want a specific engine, all-wheel drive or a safety feature only offered there. When buying used, the same mid trims are also the easiest to sell on.
Frequently asked questions
What does LE stand for on a Toyota?
Toyota has never officially defined it. LE is usually read as "Luxury Edition" and SE as "Sport Edition", but in practice LE is the comfort-focused lower grade and SE the sportier-looking one at a similar level.
Is SE better than LE?
Not better, just different. On a Toyota, SE adds sportier styling, larger wheels and usually firmer suspension, and costs a little more. LE rides more softly and, on smaller wheels, tends to be slightly more economical.
What does EX-L mean on a Honda?
EX-L is the EX trim with leather: leather-trimmed seats plus a few extra comfort features. It sits between the EX and the top Touring or Sport Touring grade.
What does the "i" in LXi, VXi and ZXi mean?
On Maruti Suzuki cars the "i" originally marked a petrol engine with fuel injection, while diesel versions used "Di" (LDi, VDi, ZDi). Diesel models have been dropped, but the petrol names stayed.
Does a higher trim level have a bigger engine?
Sometimes. Many models use the same engine in every trim, but some reserve a more powerful engine, hybrid system or all-wheel drive for higher grades. Always check the engine listed for the exact trim.
Which trim level holds its value best?
Well-equipped mid and upper trims usually resell most easily, because used buyers look for features like a reversing camera and smartphone mirroring. The very top trim often loses more money in absolute terms because it cost more new.
